How to eliminate fungi from your plants
In summer, the high temperatures and, therefore, the rise in humidity, produce the perfect environment for the fungus to roam freely. Most of the fungi that affect plants are microscopic and cause wilting, leaf drop and even plant death in a matter of days if left untreated.
The best technique to prevent the appearance of these enemies is to maintain a constant humidity and temperature, around 60% and with a maximum of 28 ºC. However, this is something hard to control in your outdoor garden with the sudden rises and falls in temperature that heat waves bring.
In this sense, what can you do to prevent this situation or deal with it once your plant has been invaded?
- Remove infected soil
If the presence of fungus is superficial, it is enough to remove the first layers of its substrate. However, it is not easy to establish the depth of the fungi with a simple look and the most common thing is they have taken over our plants.
The ideal then is a fair transplant: it is important that you remove as much soil as possible from the root ball, always being careful not to damage the roots. And do not forget to make a good drainage to prevent excess humidity, in addition to avoiding excessive watering and prolonged saturation of the base of the plants.
- Disinfect the plant
It will be useless to change the substrate if you put the plant back in the same pot. Remember fungi are microscopic, so you will not be able to see their presence with the naked eye.
For this reason, you should thoroughly wash the pot with water, soap and baking soda. After this, and to guarantee its total disinfection, apply fungicide on the entire surface, both interior and exterior.
- Clean the leaves
Depending on the fungus and the state of spread, you will not only find mold in the soil of your plants, but you will be able to see it on the leaves, both on the top and the bottom.
Once you have finished the previous steps, it will be enough to remove the fungi with a dry cloth.
In addition to these tips, it is important to remember that plants must be kept well fertilized to increase their resistance to fungi and diseases.
When sowing seeds or cuttings, wash your hands well with soap and water to avoid the transmission of fungi, and only use those that look healthy, without stains, or rot.
