Two generations leading Agrojardín

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, our General Co-Director, Victoria Huertas, and our Head of Purchasing and Operations and strategic decision support, Laura Bazán, sit down to talk about the beginning of Agrojardín, their professional lives and what female entrepreneurs should always have into consideration while starting their own business.

1. How were your beginnings as a business woman?

Victoria: I was very young, and, with my partner, we began this wonderful adventure working in the afternoons and weekends. We started by landscaping and maintaining green spaces of resident communities and individuals. From there, we decided to install our first garden center, at the same time we grew in the world of landscaping. I had to balance and sacrifice a lot in those early days by not dedicating as much time to my family as I would have liked. But it was the beginning and we had to work a lot.

2. What difference have you noticed between one generation and another within the business world? What has been the best moment of your professional career?

V: There is a big difference, especially in education, the new generations have more studies and move more in the digital world. Before, we had a total dedication to the business and that was our life. The current generation knows how to separate private life from the company and is more practical.

The best moment of our working career was the renovation of our current center, when it became what it is now, the European concept of a garden center. It was an important leap in a business level, and very rewarding.

3. What have you learned from each other as professionals?

Laura: I have learned a lot from my mother and I still have a lot to learn, but if I had to highlight something I would say her strength and resistance to face problems and difficult moments. Also, her flexibility and adaptability to face things with a certain optimism and security, but above all patience.

V: Laura has taught me to be much more demanding in everything we offer.

4. Which values do you try to transmit to the team?

V: Specialization, transparency, professionalism and above all love for our sector and passion for plants.

L: Humanity is very important to me above all else, between us as a team but also with clients: kindness, understanding, integrity and good work. Never forget the essential.

5. What is the most difficult part of your job?

V: The most difficult part is linked, like in any other company, to people. We work with our clients emotions and this has to be transmitted by our staff.

L: Exactly, the most complex thing is trying to reach people’s full potential and, along with it, the company’s potential.

6. What is your next short-term goal?

V: Consolidate the Agrojardín brand renewed and updated in trends, in addition to creating a green community as large as possible where to share this passion and love for nature.

L: Yes, we want Agrojardín to be seen as a trusted brand with greater awareness of the environment.

7. What advice would you give to a woman who wants to become a CEO?

V: The advice is to be herself. Acting with the values and feelings of women is a sure value for any company. We are patient and empathetic, and our involvement is much stronger and we carry out projects with strength and dedication.

L: Trust you, create teams and rely on inspiring figures.
