How to prepare our orchard for the fall?
September has arrived, the month in which we have to say goodbye to the summer and welcome the autumn, both in our lives and in the garden, where we will have to carry out many tasks. In order that you do not forget anything and you have your orchard or garden prepared for autumn, from Agrojardín we give you some advices.
Plan your orchard
Good planning is always essential to succeed in everything. And in an orchard, too.
With a good planning you will be able to take the maximum a benefit of your orchard and you will have controlled that in all the moment it has yield. In this way you will avoid that some empty spaces remain or that you lack space at some time for some plants.
And if you want more acdurated you can elaborate a small daily diary. In it, you can write down all the treatments you apply to your plants, observations, key dates… everything you can think of to keep everything planned and up to date!
Harvest seeds
Harvesting all the seeds is a bit of an arduous task, but we assure you that it is worth it. On the one hand, you have seeds to replant in the spring, and on the other hand, you prevent them from growing out of control in your garden.
A very important aspect to take into consideration is that the seeds should always be collected from fruits that have matured in the plant. They should then be dried in the sun and stored in a cool, dry place until spring.
Remove summer crops
It is time to say goodbye to the summer plants which have given so much joy to us and to say goodbye to them, taking them off when their production is over.
Fertilize the land
Some summer crops like peppers, cucumbers or tomatoes need a lot of nutrients, so you may have to renew the nutrients in that land so that the next crops will have enough food and will not miss anything.
War on Weeds
Perhaps the weeds have taken the opportunity of our vacation absence to proliferate and try to take over our garden. And besides, the fluctuation of September temperatures makes them come out more than usual. So at this point… it is time to start a war with them and show them who is in charge of our orchard!
Pruning and cleaning
We can’t forget to prune and clean our plants, removing the flowers that are withered and the dry branches. This will help our plants not to waste energy in other areas and prepare them to resist the winter like a champion.
Keep the pests away
We must check all our plants correctly for signs of possible pests, which could ruin everything. Because if we are careless and have some insect or fungus attacking our plants, they will not be able to strengthen and nourish themselves to survive during the winter. If you want to bet on a sustainable and ecological way to fight pests without chemicals you might be interested in integrated pest control.
It’s time to plant
Once we have completed all the relevant tasks it is time to start work and plant our new autumn plantation!
The ideal crops to sow in seeds in September are:
Chard, zucchini, onion, cabbage, kohlrabi, endive, spinach, turnip greens, pea, bean, fennel, lettuce, lentils, turnip greens, potato, parsley, radish, arugula, carrot
On the other hand, we can plant the following directly in the plant:
Artichoke, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, onion, lettuce, romanesca
At Agrojardín you will find all the tools to correctly carry out the tasks of September in your garden or orchard and all the plants to plant. Come and see us and we will be happy to assess 🙂
